Children with Down syndrome have unique communication and interaction styles due to various developmental domains affected by the syndrome. Treatment for these children can be challenging due to anatomical and physical differences. Total communication, which involves using verbal and other modalities, is an effective therapeutic strategy. Studies show that children with Down syndrome have a later start and slower growth in vocabulary acquisition. Using a combination of communication modalities can result in better outcomes. A course on language intervention for school-aged children with Down syndrome is recommended for further learning.
