Anxiety exists in four spaces: within oneself, between oneself and others, inside others, and between others. Differentiation of self is a tool to manage anxiety and improve emotional well-being. It is based on systems theory and is a continuum between enmeshment and detachment. The goal is to achieve a happy middle ground of differentiation by managing reactivity, protecting oneself from contagious anxiety, staying connected to oneself, others, and God, clarifying vision and values, and aligning them with reality. Differentiation takes time and practice, and tools for practicing include self-reflection and determining responsibilities. Examples of differentiation can be seen in movies and TV shows, and it is a lifelong art form that requires patience and practice.
