This module focuses on the importance of breast and chest feeding within black communities. Generational trauma, including unethical surgical experimentation on black slave women, has contributed to a disconnect and fear surrounding breastfeeding. The oversexualization of the black body and the removal of traditional midwives have also impacted access to breastfeeding support. Barriers such as lack of job flexibility, support from family and friends, and resources and education further hinder breastfeeding. Advocacy, education, and support are crucial in reclaiming the breastfeeding experience for black communities. Racism and biases in healthcare, as well as dismantled family dynamics and cultural beliefs, contribute to disparities in maternal health and breastfeeding rates for black mothers. It is important for healthcare workers to understand these unique challenges in order to provide appropriate support.
