Speech language pathologists are facing increased case loads and increased diversity, which can make evaluating children from non-English language backgrounds challenging. However, a three-step process can help determine if errors in English are due to native language influence or speech impairment. By identifying shared sounds between the native language and English, understanding the phono tactic constraints of each language, and considering the developmental order of sounds, pathologists can better assess speech development. Resources are available to assist pathologists in applying these steps to any language pair, and the "Difference or Disorder: Speech Development in English Language Learners" course provides further information.
